The theme of linguistics is language, and the goal of the course is to understand more about language, in particular the nature of human language. Its missions include, but not limited, to gain an understanding of what components constitute a human language, what principles govern language, what factors shape it, what makes it possible for humans to acquire language, and what relationship exists between language and culture…etc. The list is endless, and the quest is never-ending. In the long run, students are expected to find linguistics fun and fascinating. The course contents include several sub-disciplinary subjects: For the fall semester, following a course overview and an introduction to why we need to study knowledge about language and aspects of knowing a language, main subjects such as phonetics/phonology, morphology, and syntax are discussed.
