"Selected Readings of Business English Abstracts" is a specialized course designed for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at the A2 to B1 proficiency levels. This course focuses on building reading comprehension skills by specifically targeting a key genre of professional writing: the business abstract. It's a foundational step for students aiming to read more complex business articles, reports, and academic research.

Course Objectives and Methodology

The primary objective is to help students navigate and extract key information from a dense and often challenging text form. We use an analytical, skill-building approach that breaks down the structure of business abstracts. Students will learn to identify the main components of an abstract—the purpose, methodology, key findings, and implications—even with limited vocabulary. The course is not about memorizing terms; it’s about recognizing patterns, understanding context, and inferring meaning.

Key skills covered include:

Skimming and Scanning: Learning to quickly read through a text to get the main idea (skimming) and to locate specific information (scanning). These are crucial skills for anyone who needs to process large amounts of professional text efficiently.
Vocabulary Building: We will focus on high-frequency business-specific terminology and academic vocabulary that commonly appears in abstracts. Students will learn to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words from context.
Grammar for Comprehension: The course will review and apply grammatical structures common in academic and business writing, such as passive voice, noun phrases, and conditional clauses, to aid in understanding complex sentences.
Critical Analysis: Students will learn to distinguish between the abstract’s purpose, its results, and its conclusions, allowing them to evaluate the core message of the source material.

Skill Development and Key Activities

All activities are designed to foster independent reading. Students will read a variety of abstracts from different business-related fields, such as marketing, finance, management, and economics. For each abstract, students will complete guided exercises that prompt them to identify key information, summarize the main points, and define new vocabulary in context. This systematic practice builds confidence and reinforces learning.

Activities will include:

Abstract Deconstruction: Breaking down an abstract into its component parts to understand its structure.
Matching Exercises: Pairing abstracts with their full-length articles or with summaries to test comprehension.
Discussion Forums: Students will discuss the topics and findings of the abstracts, allowing for a conversational application of the content they've read.
Summary Writing: Students will practice writing their own short summaries or abstracts of simple business texts, which reinforces their understanding of the form and function of this type of writing.

Assessment and Outcomes

Assessments will be based on in-class exercises, short quizzes on vocabulary and comprehension, and a final project that involves analyzing a selection of abstracts. By the end of this course, students will be able to read and understand the main ideas of business abstracts, identify the key components of a research study, and expand their vocabulary related to academic and professional fields. This specialized skill set is a valuable asset for anyone who needs to read and comprehend professional documents in English.
