"English Writing (2)" is a foundational course for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at the A2 to B1 proficiency level. This course is designed to build the essential skills needed to produce clear, organized, and grammatically correct written English. It serves as a crucial first step for students transitioning from writing simple sentences to composing well-structured paragraphs and short essays.

Course Objectives and Methodology

The primary goal is to establish a solid understanding of the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to revising a final draft. The course employs a process-oriented approach, meaning we focus not just on the final product, but on the systematic steps involved in good writing. Students will learn to pre-write (brainstorming, outlining), draft, revise, and edit their work. This method helps demystify writing and makes the task more manageable.

Key writing skills covered in the course include:

Sentence Structure: Reviewing and practicing the construction of simple, compound, and complex sentences to add variety and sophistication to writing.
Paragraph Development: Mastering the fundamental components of a well-organized paragraph: a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
Cohesion and Coherence: Using transition words and phrases to connect ideas smoothly within and between sentences, ensuring the writing flows logically.
Grammar and Punctuation: Focusing on common errors at this level, such as subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, article usage, and fundamental punctuation rules (e.g., commas, periods).

Skill Development and Key Activities

Throughout the semester, students will engage in a variety of practical writing activities. We'll start with journaling and short-answer exercises to help students generate ideas and gain confidence. The core of the course will involve writing different types of paragraphs, such as descriptive, narrative, and expository paragraphs. For instance, students might write a descriptive paragraph about their favorite place or a narrative paragraph about a memorable event.

In-class activities include peer-editing workshops, where students provide constructive feedback on each other's work, and group brainstorming sessions. The instructor will provide targeted feedback on drafts, highlighting areas for improvement in both content and grammar. The course also utilizes authentic materials, such as short articles and essays, to serve as models of effective writing. Students will analyze these texts to identify good writing techniques and apply them to their own work.

Assessment and Outcomes

Assessment will be based on a portfolio of writing assignments, including several drafts and final versions of paragraphs and a short multi-paragraph essay. There will also be quizzes on grammar rules and vocabulary relevant to writing. By the end of "English Writing (1)," students will be able to produce well-organized paragraphs on a variety of topics, demonstrating a clear topic sentence, adequate supporting details, and proper grammar and punctuation. They will have gained a systematic approach to writing that will serve as a strong foundation for future academic and professional communication. This course is a pivotal step towards becoming a more confident and effective writer in English.
