This course will introduce students to the food and beverage industry.
This elected course helps students build the skills necessary to successfully complete the tasks on the TOEIC test (Test of English for International Communication). This particular test is a standardized test designed to assess an individual’s ability to understand English used in international business situation. It is also often used to measure employees’ English proficiency and identify their capability of handling language-specific responsibilities. Two sections are included in the test: Listening comprehension (100 multiple-choice questions) and Reading (100 multiple-choice questions). Since an increasing number of students have difficulty passing reading comprehension level B1 (CEF), although they are able to pass listening comprehension level B1. Emphases on this elected course will be on parts relevant to reading skills, it is expected that students will have a better understanding of what a particular word means and looking for clues as to what the text is attempting to convey.
The main purpose of this course is to help students develop language skills and language test-taking strategies. For the development of language skills, students are expected to learn:
--sets of vocabulary relevant to comprehension of the passages
--parts of speech relevant to grammatical structure of the sentences
--different topics of the passages that could bring up the background knowledge of the test-taker.

To be aware of test-taking strategies, students are expected to know:
--how to analyze words and the word family and by using the word formation parts such as roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
--How to analyze the test items for the test questions by using grammatical knowledge.
--How to analyze each reading passage to grasp the main idea
--How to first analyze the test questions to provide topic tips for a direction guiding of the reading comprehension.
his course is an introductory course, aiming to help cultivate students’ linguistic competence, literary taste and cultural awareness by exposing them to well-known literary works in English. Three genres of English literature in particular-- poetry, fiction and drama-- and their differences will be explored. Different aspects of literature such as tone, rhythm, voice, theme, character, point of view, narrative techniques, metaphor, symbol and the like will be studied to empower students to appreciate and analyze literature. Class discussion and group performing literature are both required in addition to a mid-term and a final exam, as they provide good opportunity for students to practice and thereby to strengthen their communicative competence. Outside reading of contemporary English works is also required as it helps to familiarize students with the major issues that the works are supposed to address.
